God is looking out for your eternal good.

God is looking out for your eternal good.

When we take a look at 2 Peter 1:5 and following we learn that faith is the foundation in which we add to other characteristics of our life. For example we add to our faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. And we know from experience that faith is something that we cannot feel or touch. We find that faith is the foundation for our Christian life. Likewise trust is something that we cannot feel a touch. And when we look at Scripture, search the Bible from cover to cover we cannot touch or feel trust or faith.

Promotes obedience

All of us at various times in our lives had experienced adversity to varying degrees. Job 5:7 “but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. Learning to trust God in times of difficulty is a slow and difficult process. It is a continuing process of growth. Life is a series of speed bumps. One of my favorite Psalms is 119. And in verse 67 of that Psalm Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word. The psalmist is telling us that experiencing difficulties in our life promotes an obedient life. It makes us realize that we must depend upon God.

Promotes teachable spirit

In that same Psalm verses 71-72 the psalmist is telling us that difficulties in our life provides a teachable moment. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. 72 The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

I have heard over the years many questions:

Does God actually control the circumstances of our lives?

Do bad things just happen to us because we live in a sin-cursed world?

If God really does control the circumstances of our lives why did he allow my friend to die of cancer?

Can I truly trust God when the going gets tough in all areas of my life?

The answers to these questions are found in God’s word. God intended Scripture to encourage us during our adversity. If we look at the people of the Bible that experienced adversity in their life: Paul, Abraham, Joseph, Jeremiah, and Job just to name a few. Elijah ran and hid from God. Moses tried to hurry God’s plan. All of these people are just like you and me. They have the same emotions that you and I have. Paul experienced anger, discouragement, fatigue, anxiety and he suffered as we suffer.

2 Timothy 4:9-18 tells us that during all the problems of our lives God is with us. Matthew 28:20 God promises us that he is always with us. Acts 18:10 God is with us. One of my favorite passages that provides strength for me during difficult times is 2 Timothy 4:17 – God stands at our side and gives us strength during those difficult days.

As I have experienced adversity in my life and watched others experience adversity I have come to the conclusion that adversity will do one of two things. Draw us closer to God or drive us away from God. This is a choice that each of us must make when adversity comes into our life and it most surely will come.

Beware what you read on the Internet and in books. There are many opinions; some are good and follow God’s word. However there are opinions out there that oppose God’s word.

I recommend any of C. S. Lewis’ books.

“A grief observed” – his wife (Joy) died of cancer about two years after their marriage.

“The problem of pain”

“Surprised by Joy” – describes C. S. Lewis’ journey from atheism to Christianity.

Our trust in God must be based not on someone else’s experience but upon what God has told us about Himself in Scripture. I do not have the answers to the problems of life but in every situation that I have encountered I have found encouragement and strength from God’s word.

How has God’s word helped you through difficult times in your life?
