Enlarging Our Horizons
Enlarging Our Horizons
When we think of God’s sovereignty we usually think of how it affects us immediately. Most of us think of the sovereignty of God only in terms of its immediate effect upon us, our family, our friends, and our work. God promised to Abraham and his seed that all nations would be blessed through Christ. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” How long has it taken for this promise to be completed? That promise has not been completely fulfilled at this time.
God had a plan from the very beginning to redeem mankind. God’s plan was that all mankind would be blessed through his only Son Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:9–10 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Over half of the world’s population lives in countries where governments are hostile to Christianity. They live in countries where missionaries are severely hindered from proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
How do we trust God to fulfill his promises when the current events and conditions seem contrary to this fulfillment?
Daniel recognized that God’s people were in exile because of their sins and he recognized that God is sovereign – Daniel 9.
Daniel also recognized that only God could restore them from exile. He trusted in the faithfulness of God and he prayed daily. We must learn to trust God for the opportunities to spread the gospel. This is difficult as we see nations attempt to stamp out Christianity.
In history we see many individuals such as Herod, Pilate, and the Jewish leaders who acted freely and accomplished exactly what they wanted to. Yet their actions also accomplished God’s plan and purpose. (Acts 4:27-28; Proverbs 16:9)
There are many examples that demonstrate this principle. We see this in the life of Nebuchadnezzar who at the height of his power we see his sanity taken from him. He was driven away from his people and ate grass like a cow. Seven years later his sanity was restored to him. He was restored and became even greater than before.
Daniel 4:33–36 Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws. 34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” 36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and splendor returned to me. My counselors and my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.
Nebuchadnezzar went from the greatest monarch of his time to a man living like a wild beast to an even greater monarch. This was all as the hand of God and it happened in just seven years. The God of Nebuchadnezzar’s time is the same God today. No government official is beyond this way of The Sovereign God.
God is sovereign of everything. The battle is not lost for lack of scandal. Victory belongs to the Lord and to the nation he chooses. We can take comfort and courage the threat of a nuclear holocaust, it will not happen apart from the sovereign will of God. We do not know what the will of God is in this regard. We cannot rule out the possibility of a nuclear holocaust happening.
We can rule this out due to the uncontrolled hand of a madman God controls the hand of the mad tyrant and the careless officer. Don’t fall prey to the nuclear anxiety or global warming of our day. But trust in the sovereign control of God and pray for his protection. This thing of warfare is difficult because we think our country is always right.
The question is: Will God bless our side with victory? We assume that God will bless our side with victory Scripture does not support such a view. Scripture does support that God sometimes uses an evil nation to punish another one then in turn punishes the first nation for its sin.
What about the sin of abortion in our nation?
What about the sin of homosexuality?
