Disease of the Heart
Disease of the Heart
We are experiencing a deadly disease in our society today. What are you doing to keep yourself from getting that disease? This is a valid question for us today. I believe most of us are thinking about this disease in a physical sense instead of an intellectual exercise. We have learned in the past few weeks exactly how people will react when facing a deadly disease such as covid-19. The death rate for those that get covid-19 is less than 1% according to the Center for Infectious Disease Research.
Most of the people in our country are going about their lives with only the changes forced on them by the law and the physical conditions around them. Of course, that involves social distancing, gathering restrictions, and shopping based on available items, and of course sheltering in place orders. Our greatest concern is protecting ourselves and our loved ones by the precautions we take; frequent handwashing’s, carrying and using hand sanitizers, and doing everything that is reasonably possible. The biggest example that people are doing is buying things that are not necessities. Most of our fellow Americans are doing everything they possibly can, everything that is recommended and then some, all of these protection precautions that are being taken are physical.
When we first moved from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to East Texas, I was asked to teach a Bible class. I chose to teach a class on “Diseases of the Heart”. What we are seeing in our society today definitely is a “Disease of the Heart”. Sin has an infection rate of 100%, and its fatality rate without treatment is hundred percent as well. Romans 6:23 (ESV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The question that you should be considering is: “Are you treating the disease of sin as seriously as you are treating covid-19”?
Sin affects every individual, and left untreated, always results in spiritual death. You would think that each of us would go to whatever means possible to treat the disease of sin. We have seen in our society today the extremes that people will go not to get covid-19 where the death rate is less than 1%. They will stay away from places and things where they might become infected with covid-19. Yet they make no effort to stay away from places, things, and situations that might cause them to commit sin. They are not cautious about who they associate with, evil companions corrupt good morals. 1 Corinthians 15:33 (ESV) 33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Why do individuals allow themselves to be placed into situations where they will be tempted? Why do people not pursue things of purity? 2 Timothy 2:22–23 (ESV) 22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.
We will probably be working on a cure for covid-19 for some time to improve the treatment. God has worked out a cure for our sin that was accomplished over 2000 years ago. Sin has a cure, yet we take sinning so lightly. The apostle Paul wrote it in Romans very aptly. Romans 6:1–2 (ESV) 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Paul goes on to explain in more detail how we can remove sin from our life. Romans 6:3–5 (ESV) 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Will you go as far to avoid the disease of sin, as you have gone to avoid covid-19?
